RECYCLED SMOKERS OUTPOST

We have friends that smoke and they are always good about going out side to smoke. So I decided to make them a smokers outpost that hides the butts.

Materials:

1 empty pail, 22.5 lbs size

1 piece of 2" PVC Pipe 24" long(Lowes $3.00)

1 PVC Pipe cap 2"(Lowes $2.00)

2 part epoxy, amber shellac, and red, grey, and black paint

Tools:

Drill & 3/4" bit, felt marker, and craft knife

Steps:

1. Paint the label area of pail with black paint.

2. Drill 3/4" hole on both sides of one end of PVC Pipe(hole for butts).

3. Set 2" pipe on cover in the center, use marker to trace pipe circumference on cover, cut out marked area with craft knife.

4. Set cover on flat surface and insert pipe into hole in cover, apply a ring of 2 part epoxy on the pipe and cover joint, allow to set.

5. Turn cover/pipe assembly over and epoxy the other side of joint, allow to set.

6. Paint pipe cap, as in photo, with grey and red to give the look of the ash and the lit end of a cigarette, place cap on top end of cover/pipe assembly.

7. Apply amber shellac(or a paint of similar color) to base of pipe to assimilate cigarette filter.

8. Put a layer of sand in the bottom of pail then place cover/pipe assembly onto pail.

WOOD MADE CANDY DISPENSER

Old fashion and novel candy dispenser made of wood.

Materials:

3ft. of 1" x 4" pine

1ft. of 1" x 6" pine

1 piece of maple 1/4" x 1 3/8" x 1 7/8"(sliding door)

1 piece of 1" dowel 1" long

2 pieces of 1/4" dowel 1 1/8" long

1 wooden cabinet knob 1 1/8" dia (size is optional)

1 piece of string 20" long

1 small brass eyelet

1 flat head wood screw #10 x 2.5"

1 flat head wood screw # 10 x 1"

4 flat head wood screws #4 x .5"

1 pint Ball canning jar with just screw on part of lid

1 wood button plug 3/8"

wood glue, finish

Tools:

Saw(ideally a table saw), drill and bits, screw driver, wood clamps, sander, & 3" hole saw.

Steps:

1. Check Fig. A on first drawing below, cut the 4 pieces of 1" x 4" pine from the 3ft section of 1 by 4 and glue together as shown, this forms the body of the dispenser.

2. Drill 1" holes in the body as in Fig. B on first drawing.

3. Drill 1/8" pilot hole about 3/4" deep in the right side of body as shown in Fig. C

4. Cut the top from remaining section of 3ft. 1 by 4 pine and drill 1" and 3/16" holes as shown in Fig. D

5. Cut a piece 1 1/2" x 5 3/4" from the 1ft piece of 1" x 6" pine, cut 2 pieces of 1/4" dowel 1 1/8" long, drill 1/4" hole in piece of pine and glue dowels in holes, drill 1" hole as in Fig. E(this forms the shuttle)

6. Cut bottom from the piece of 1" x 6" piece of pine as in Fig. F

7. Cut 3 pieces for the tray as in Fig. G(pieces are shown above and below the Fig. G)

8. Cut maple door to size as shown in Fig. H

9. Cut a piece of 1" dowel and center drill 3/16" hole as shown in Fig. I

10. Using 3" hole saw cut the wheel(wheel can be cut with saber or band saw), drill and countersink holes as in Fig. J(wheel can be cut from 1" x 6")

11. Cut the door slide pieces from remaining 1" x 6" pine as in Fig. K, glue #1 pieces to the end of #2 pieces in opposites(this forms the bottom stops for door.

12. Sand all the pieces and put finish on the shuttle, top, and door from steps 4, 5, and 8(install eyelet in center top of door)

13. Glue 1" dowel to the wheel(making sure to line up center holes)apply finish

14. Assemble all of the pieces as shown in the second drawing below(except for the top, shuttle, jar cover, and the door) and apply finish

15. Insert the door into the door slides, place the shuttle into notch at top of body, and attach the top.

16. Thread the string through the holes drilled in the top and connect one end to the eyelet in the door and tie the other end to the 1" dowel, turn the wheel to wrap excess string

17. Attach the Ball canning jar cover to the top as in second drawing.

18. Fill the jar with jelly beans or small gum balls(no large or wrapped candy), hold the dispenser upside down and screw the jar into the cover attached to the top, set back in upright position.

19. To operate slide the shuttle totally to the left of dispenser to load with candy, slide shuttle totally to the right to load candy shoot, turn wheel to lift door and candy will drop into tray.

Notes: Attach the door slides to the front of the body centered around the 1" hole and make sure the door is in place before attaching the top. When attaching the top it can be glued or attached with 4 decorative screws. The string can be waxed slightly to make it slide better through the holes in the top

ABS PIPE CANDLE HOLDERS

Classy but simple set of candle holders made from 3" ABS Pipe.
Materials
1 piece of 3" ABS Pipe.
2 brass candle holder inserts.
1 can of Gloss Black spray paint.

Tools
Drill with 7/8" drill bit.
Hand saw & sandpaper.
Rubber mallet.

Steps
    1. Cut a 3" long piece of 3" ABC Pipe.
    2. Cut pipe in half(as in 1st photo below).
    3. Fully sand both halfs.
    4. Drill 7/8" hole in center of rounded half of pipe(2nd photo below).

    5. Spray 2 coats of Gloss Black on each pipe half. 

    6. Tap brass inserts into pipe halfs with rubber mallet.
    7. Insert candles into holders as in photo above.

RECYCLED TOCO HOLDER

We had the grand children over and they wanted Tocos. Had a hard time holding the toco to add the fillings, so we took and empty yogart container and made a holder. It was easy and thought we would share the ideal.

Materials:

1 empty yogart container.

Pattern paper.

Tools:

Sharpe marker.

Pair of scissors.

Box cutter.

Fingernail file.

Steps:

1.  Layout an oval shaped pattern as in photo #2 below.

2.  Cut out the oval shape with scissors and lay evenly over empty yogart container.

3.  Trace around patern on to the container.

4.  Using box cutter and scisors remove the area inside the pattern.

5.  Smooth the rough edges with the fingernail file.

6.  Put new toco hold to use.

WOOD SPOON WINE HOLDER

This unique wine bottle holder is made from a wooden spoon and is easy to make.

Materials
1 wood spoon.
2 brass brads.
Wood glue

Tools
Drill with 1 1/4" spade bit.
Hammer.
Hand saw.

Steps
1. Drill 1 1/4" hole in the center of the spoon as in photo above.
2. Sand a taper in the bottom of the hole as in photo above.
3. Repeat step 2 in the top of the hole in the back of the spoon.(this allow bottle to tip at the correct angle).
4. Cut 2 inches off the end of the spoon handle at 45 degrees(angle is cut from the top of the handle toward the dish part of the spoon).
5. Use the piece off the handle for the base of holder as in photo.
6. Reshape the piece off the handle so it is rounded on both ends.
7. Glue the cut off spoon to the section you removed and secure with 2 brass brats
8. Add 2 coats of poly if you wish.
9. Place the wine bottle into the hole in the spoon as in photo(you will have to test the bottle location until it comes to a balancing point).
